Reading the Gorge: a season opener

The machine
The Columbia River Gorge is the only sea-level passage through the Cascade Range. West of the mountains the Pacific keeps the air cool and dense. East of them the high desert bakes. Air moves from high pressure to low, and the Gorge is the path of least resistance — so it accelerates, and it blows against the river current, which stacks up the swell that makes the place famous.
Spring is when the differential starts to matter. The first warm days in the east pull the marine layer through, and the thermal westerly that defines summer begins to show up on the forecast.
What it means for testing
Every wing in the current development loop gets its first real-wind passes in April and May. Spring conditions are colder and gustier than July — which is exactly why they are useful. A wing that behaves in a 15–30 knot gust range in 48 °F water has no surprises left for August.
This season's loop:
- REVSTAR-S — all three Speed Halo sizes. Specs are still blank on purpose.
- OX Lock rev 14 — now on every test fuselage. Development log here.
- REVSTAR-C EZ — the three EZ-connection Carve wings, in final tuning.
Planning your first sessions
| Month | Typical wind | Water | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| April | Patchy, strong fronts | ~45–50 °F | 5/4 wetsuit, hood, boots. Big wing, mid-AR front wing. |
| May | Thermals building | ~50–55 °F | Best value month — fewer crowds, real wind. |
| June–Aug | Daily thermals | ~60–68 °F | Peak. Launch early, the river gets busy. |
| September | Steady, lighter | ~62 °F | Glide season — high-AR wings shine. |
Check the live wind at Hood River before you drive. Sandbar is the main launch; the Event Site is easier in big wind.
Workshop door policy
If you're coming through Hood River, it is simple: if the door is open, come in. We would rather you see the parts than read about them.
Questions
When does the wind season start in Hood River?
Reliable thermal westerlies typically build from mid-April and run through September, peaking June–August. Spring sessions are colder and gustier but often strong.
Why is the Columbia Gorge so windy?
Cool, dense marine air west of the Cascades and hot desert air east create a pressure differential. The Gorge is the only sea-level gap through the range, so the air funnels through it and accelerates.

Where to wing foil in Hood River: the Gorge spot guide
The main Hood River launches for wing foiling, windsurf-foiling and kitefoiling — Sandbar, the Event Site, Wells Island, Stevenson, Rowena — with wind, current, crowd and skill notes from the OXZA workshop down the road.
High aspect vs low aspect foil wings: which one should you ride?
High-aspect hydrofoil wings glide and pump further; low-aspect wings lift early and forgive mistakes. How to decide by your riding, your conditions and your skill — with REVSTAR examples from AR 7 to AR 13.
