Where to wing foil in Hood River: the Gorge spot guide

How the Gorge works
Cool marine air west, hot desert east, one sea-level gap: the wind funnels through the Gorge and blows against the river's flow, which stacks up swell. The season post explains the machine; the practical version is that westerlies build from late morning and peak mid-afternoon in summer.
The spots
Hood River Sandbar
Sandy spit at the mouth of the Hood River. Shallow, sandy launch; steady wind once you are past the river mouth; room to foil upwind without traffic. Current from the Hood River itself can push you toward the Columbia shipping lane — stay upwind of the sandbar tip. Free. All levels.
Event Site
The classic Hood River launch with a grassy rigging area and easy entry. Busiest in July; kites and windsurfers share it. Shore wind is often lighter than out in the channel. Day-use fee in season. Beginner to intermediate.
Wells Island
Across the channel from the Event Site. Steeper, more organised swell; the place for downwind glide on an L wing and a long mast. Crossing the shipping channel is part of the session — know the barge schedule. Experienced only.
Stevenson (Bob's Beach)
Twenty minutes west. Often lighter than Hood River but smoother water and fewer people; good for first flights. Beginner-friendly.
Rowena / Mayer State Park
East, in the drier country. Wind arrives earlier and blows when Hood River is patchy, with flatter water. All levels, stronger wind.

Gear for the Gorge
Summer afternoons are 20–30 knots with chop. Most riders run a mid-aspect wing (A 725s or A 800), a 94–104 mast, and a hand wing two sizes smaller than they think. Titanium hardware and a rinse: the Columbia is fresh water, but the sand finds every thread.
Workshop
OXZA is a few minutes from the Sandbar. If you are in town and the door is open, come in — we would rather show you the parts than describe them. Contact.
