Fuselage length: what it actually changes on a hydrofoil

Think wheelbase
The stabilizer's job is to resist pitch changes. How much it resists depends on its size and on its lever arm — the distance from the front wing. Move it further back and the same stab produces more damping. That is all a fuselage length change is, and it explains every effect below.
What changes
| Shorter (FU600) | Longer (FU860) | |
|---|---|---|
| Pitch stability | Less — reacts to every input | More — calm, forgiving |
| Turning | Tight, snappy, low effort | Drawn, carved, needs commitment |
| Pumping | Quick, high-cadence | Long, efficient, slower cadence |
| Breaching recovery | Harder — pitch swings fast | Easier |
| Stall warning | Less | More |
| Best with | Small / mid-AR wings, surf, freestyle | Large wings, high-AR gliders, downwind |
Pairing with wings
A high-aspect wing already has a narrow window; pairing it with a short fuselage narrows it further. A big low-AR wing on a long fuselage gets very stable, which is either perfect for learning or boring, depending on the rider.
- FU600 + C 640 / A 560s → reactive, surfy.
- FU700 + A 725s / A 800 → the daily driver.
- FU860 + L 750 / A 1100 → glide and early lift.
- FU1000 + R / S → windsurf race, titanium only.
The stabilizer trade
Long fuselage plus a small stab behaves much like a short fuselage plus a large stab. That gives you two dials instead of one. Adjust the stab first (it is cheaper and quicker); change the fuselage when the stab can't get you there. The stabilizer pairing guide has the table.
One honest note
Most riders who think they want a shorter fuselage actually want a smaller stabilizer. Try the ST-A 140 before buying an FU600.
Questions
Does a shorter foil fuselage turn better?
Tighter, yes. A shorter fuselage brings the stabilizer closer to the front wing, so the foil responds faster to pitch and roll input — at the cost of stability.
Is a longer fuselage easier for beginners?
Generally yes. More distance to the stabilizer means more pitch damping, which makes touchdowns and gusts easier to survive. FU700 or FU860 for most learners.
