Where it came from, in ten minutes

Video by Cynthia "Cynbad" Brown. Embedded with attribution; OXZA does not own this footage.

We did not make this and we are not going to summarise it badly. It is ten minutes, it is first-hand, and it covers ground that is not written down anywhere else. Watch it on her channel if you would rather give her the view.

What actually changes under the board

Almost nothing, and that is the useful part.

A parawing is a soft canopy you hold. It has no leading-edge tube and no strut, so there is nothing to inflate and nothing to break, and it stuffs into a pocket when you are riding it hands-free. Everything from the board down is the same hardware a windsurf-foil or hand wing rider is already on.

That shows up in our own catalogue. Of the 82 REVSTAR parts, 69 carry a parawing tag — every frontwing line, every mast, every fuselage and every stabilizer. There is no parawing fuselage and no parawing stabilizer, because there does not need to be one.

The one choice worth thinking about is mast length. Riding a canopy tends to put you in deeper, less organised water than a flat-water session does, and a longer mast buys you room before the frontwing gets close to the top.

MastLengthPrice
REVSTAR-M 7474 cm$999
REVSTAR-M 8484 cm$1,099
REVSTAR-M 9494 cm$1,199
REVSTAR-M 104104 cm$1,299
REVSTAR-M 114114 cm$1,399
REVSTAR-M 128128 cm$1,499
REVSTAR-M 146146 cm$1,599

Those are the carbon M masts. The full mast range also covers the MX line from 85 to 125 cm.

Where to start

If you already ride a foil, you are most of the way there — you need a canopy, not a new setup. If you are starting from nothing, Build Your Setup walks the four choices in order and only offers parts that fit each other. The frontwing range is where the size decision actually lives.

OXZA lists three parawings — THING 4.0, FLING and BLING. All three are sold out right now; the foil that goes under them is not.

Questions

What is a parawing?

A handheld ram-air canopy flown while riding a hydrofoil. It has no battens and nothing to inflate, it packs down to about the size of a jacket, and it is the only part of the setup that is specific to parawing riding.

Do you need a special hydrofoil for parawing?

No. Sixty-nine of the eighty-two parts in the REVSTAR catalogue are tagged for parawing use, across every frontwing, mast, fuselage and stabilizer line. The canopy is what changes; the foil under the board does not.

Does OXZA sell parawings?

Three are listed — THING 4.0, FLING and BLING, all handheld ram-air canopies — and all three are sold out at the moment. The foil parts that go underneath them are in stock.
