Hazards

  • Cold Pacific Ocean water with strong rip currents common in bay entrances
  • Sudden wind shifts and lulls typical of coastal Oregon bays
  • Rocky outcrops and submerged debris along bay perimeter
  • Fog and reduced visibility during early morning and winter months

What that means for you

  • Walk gear out — don't drag downwind across rocks
  • Strong current — walk back upwind, don't body-drag down

Amenities

  • Local beach access points with parking near the bay
  • Nearby coastal towns with shops and food services
  • Rental facilities likely available in nearby Yaquina Bay area

Local tips

Winter months (Dec-Jan) and spring (Mar-Apr) offer the most consistent wind with 120 windy days annually. Check local tide charts before sessions as shallow bay areas can be inaccessible at low tide.

Launch & beach

Flat bay water makes launching easy for beginners, but check tide levels as sandbars shift. South and SSW winds provide most consistent conditions for launching from protected bay areas.

Local etiquette

Respect other water users including fishermen and kayakers common in bays. Keep clear of marked navigation channels and commercial boat traffic.

What to wear

5/4mm or 6/5mm winter wetsuit essential year-round due to cold Pacific water (50-55°F). Summer months (Jul-Aug) may allow 4/3mm, but water stays cold even in peak season.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one
  • Hydrofoil — light-wind spot, rideable from ~10 kn

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
3/2 mm full wetsuit.
On land
Hoody and jacket; long pants in the evening.

Derived from the spot's latitude (temperate zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

Flat water. No swell lines, no closeouts—just sandbars and shallows that let you focus on technique instead of survival. Launch from the bay proper and you can actually progress without getting hammered.

That's the upside. The trade-off: wind here is moody. You'll get 10-15 knot sessions punctuated by dead calm, then sudden gusts that push you downwind fast. Reading conditions beats rhythm-riding at this spot.

Wind & Conditions

120 rideable days annually, concentrated in winter (Dec-Jan) and spring (Mar-Apr). S and SSW winds funnel through best. Summer is unreliable. NNW and SE winds occur but shift unpredictably, especially near the bay entrance—conditions can flip without warning.

Windy days skew variable. Lulls and sudden strength shifts are normal. Not a spot where you dial in a session plan and execute it.

Water & Hazards

Pacific cold year-round—5mm suit minimum, even summer. Rip currents at bay entrances are legitimate risks. Tide management is critical; low tide converts the bay into a navigable but shallow minefield. Rocky outcrops and debris line the perimeter. Scout your launch zone.

Who It Works For

Beginners wanting flat water without swell. Riders comfortable with variable wind and tide-dependent access. If you need consistent power and predictability, go elsewhere.

Access

Coastal towns nearby offer services. Confirm rental availability in the Yaquina Bay area before driving. Download tide charts in advance.
